Too many stats

From: liberumarbitrium (liberumarbitrium@yahoo.com) | Date: 2002-11-07 20:15:26 UTC
I cut and pasted this from a person's posting.
P F X V E C R L TS
I've only been doing this a year and haven't seen these before. Is
this new?
Can anytone tell me what they mean.

As an aside, I think some of us, whom I won't embarrass, are getting
a little too carried away with numbers. Does it really matter if you
have found 15 boxes or 1500? No, of course not. Some people aren't
physically able to devote too much to the hobby, now-apparently a
competive sport, yet enjoy it as much for the simple fact your off in
the woods.

I admit I haven't found 100's of boxes. I only wear an LBNA numbers
patch on my backpack on the off chance a person might see them and
introduce themselves, not to establish some sort of hierarchy. I
guess I'm just not an in-your-face kinda guy. I think like the rest
of society, status and aggressiveness are leaking into the
letterboxing community.
I think the website volunteers are the only ones who should be
allowed to brag extensively about anything!

To me, it just sounds like somebody that's taking the hobby just
a little too seriously (or maybe an over-excited newbie), but what
the heck? It's not like it's doing any harm. *shrug* If they feel
better breaking down their numbers like this, why should it
bother anyone else?

Okay, I totally made that number up, I have no idea how many
posts I made, but does it really matter?

wow.  Ouch.

I am certainly not trying to be competitive about anything.  I love this sport and was excited by the fact that I had found my 100th box.  I was merely trying to share my excitement, not one-up anyone.   If someone took offense to this, I'm sorry.  But, that isn't going to lessen the fact that I'm excited about it.

As for the extra PFXLTS...etc... letters, it's all just for fun.  Nothing to get bent out of shape about.

Okay, okay, i blew off too much steam. Sorry. Not trying to sound
holier than... just a little tired of some people, NOT you always
tossing numbers around. It as if they states were part of their name.

Okay, I am extremely guilty of out of control stats! The goofier I
am feeling, the longer my stats line gets. I don't feel that a long
line of stats makes me better than anyone else, it is just a fun way
to express the variety of letterboxing experiences I have had and to
personalize the stats line a bit. (plus I enjoy breaking the rules)
So in the spirit of more is more...

It could always be a code that is the key to an otherwise
indecipherable mystery box. One must always be open minded
about what flies across this list, I guess ...

I've been noticing the stats off and on, they don't bother me but I
do get curious as to what some of them mean. I'm sure this has been
re-hashed a million times, but hey - newbie here. I get the feeling
that some are inside jokes/notes, and that's cool too.
I see different ones in different posts and can't remember other
variations, so I'm using the ones from Randy's post as a jumping
point since I just read it (Thanks Randy !)

I think: P=Placed, F=Found, X=Exchanged

What are:
E= Eaten?
T= Traded?
V= Vaccinated?
C= Crushed?
R= Replaced?
L= Lost?

Yeah lame guesses, I know. Thanks in advance for clearing my
confusion, I seem to be brimming with it lately :-)

perfectionest and since she doesn't post it's my choice.
If you've been doing this a year then you obviously haven't been
reading the talk list.
Nothing can embarrass me anymore.
I am definitely not a competitive person. That really makes me
laugh. I take great pride in coming in last at some things. Like that
stupid card game Bonco or whatever it's called. Losers get a nice
prize too.
IMHO methinks you need to lighten-up and have some fun. Count,
don't count. Believe it when I say enjoy everyday to it's fullest.
Down the road you will be standing in line, counting your regrets,
that you missed out on an opportunity that might have been fun.
Heaven forbid! Fun, what a concept!
BTW I don't have an LbNA patch to show my accomplishments. I just
open my mouth and say "How do you do?" It's amazing all the
wonderful people I've met just using what God gave me.
And on one last note I'm sick and tired of all this politically
correctness BS. It's really gotten out of hand.

I agree. This is not a competitive sport. Letterboxing is not a zero-sum game. However, I don't think anyone is advocating turning our hobby into a competitive sport, and I don't think that people (like me and my family, for instance) who enjoy their stat line are trying to make it so.

I count for two reasons. First and foremost, it's fun, and watching those numbers climb makes me smile. :-)

"Lost" certainly seems to be on the mark ... as for "Vaccinated", the
vaccine obviously hasn't worked, as RR still seems to be infecting some
peoples' activities ... (its interesting to note, tho, that the largest
known concentration of LBs is in an NP ...)

Another observation, which I think is more obvious, is that from a purely
bandwitdh standpoint, the discussion of the stats has far exceeded the
annoyance of the stats, at least for the next 10,000 years or so (which
I think even exceeds the half-life of tupperware, much less my attention
span ...)

(I guess "liberumarbitrium" gets the point (well, e's even admitted e gets
the point), but anyway, nothing wrong with sending lots of messages about
fun ... so long as the messages in and of themselves are fun (my messages
try to be fun, but that's up to the reader, as any good semiotician
knows ...))

(tho its not going too far out on a limb to observe that some people
could find it "clich" to add a letter for everything that happens out
on the trail, but to each is own ... clich can be fun ...)

Cheers
(and don't flame we, we already know I'm no fun :-))
